Claxton’s ‘The Single Cask’ Linkwood 2006 (11 year old) 53.5%

Bourbon Hogshead 1726-89/ Dist: July 2006 Btl: 2017/ Tasted: Nov 2017

Aromas of edgy but sweet barley, along with a touch of lemon sherbet and cereal. Yes, it’s a little on the young side and ever so slightly feinty, but it has the vibrancy of youth going for it!

The palate opens with dry and dusty barley with hints of vanilla and honey. In the mouth it feels more evolved than the nose would suggest – Just! Pleasantly intense and citric middle leads into a long, honeyed and barley’d finish. Personally I would have given a couple of extra years in the cask.

North Star Spirits Linkwood 2006 (10 year old) 60.2%

Bourbon Hogshead/ Dist: July 2006 Btl: May 2017/ Tasted: Jun 2017

A lovely fresh nose of lime, crisp white fruit, barley and grass. The oak adds a subtle vanilla custard note and with time it becomes quite honeyed, although the alcohol holds that sweetness in check. Quite malty with a touch of beeswax.

The palate is tight and mineral with a subtle honey and oily vanilla note. Pleasantly juicy on the middle with hints of malt, grass and flowers. The finish is a little masked but the honey and malt lingers.

A drop of water deepens the nose and brings out some lovely, dusty barley and gives the fruit a lovely fragrant edge. The palate is fuller and display more honey and malt now as well as some lightly oiled, fleshy fruit and a touch of coffee. Lovely, juicy finish.

Edition Spirits Linkwood 1997 (18 year old) 59.5%

Refill Bourbon Hogshead/ Code: EDI0116/ Dist: 1997 Btl: Sept 2015/ Tasted: Oct 2015

A lovely intensity of dense barley aromas and balancing citrus. It becomes quite herbal with a touch of malt, treacle, greengage, gooseberry, white liquorice and vanilla appearing.

The palate is very much like the nose, opening with the barley and citrus. Hints of honey coated white fruit follow along with a touch of vanilla. The alcohol masks the middle but the lightly toffee’d oak comes through well on the finish.

Water emphasises the toffee and herbal character on the nose and brings out a touch of aniseed, mint and camphor. The palate is more toffee’d but it has brought out a generous degree of off-sweet fruit and honey. Longer now with a touch of aniseed and lingering citrus with the oak returning on the after-taste.

Malts of Scotland Linkwood 2000 (14 year old) 55.8%

Refill Sherry Butt/ Dist: 2000 Btl: 2014/ Tasted: April 2015

A beautiful, fragrant nose of dusty barley, manuka honey, freesia, perfumed rose and light herbal notes as the sherry aromas arrive. Hints of burnt toffee and malt darkens the aromas with time.

Succulently barley’d with sawdust, apricot, honey and light coffee. Quite alcoholic which masks any further development. Intense, dry finish but the juicy barley reappears.

Water emphasises the drier oak notes and brings out some buscuity notes as well. Still quite dusty and subtly herbal. The palate is softer and displays more honey and citrus. It has also emphasised the oak vanillins and dusty barley. Still quite dry on the finish with a lightly coffee’d after-taste.

Dist: 2006 Btl: 2017/ Tasted: Oct 2017

A little edgy and industrial with hard barley and very faint hints of dried fruit.

A little less edgy on the palate as the vanilla, subtle dried fruit and shortbread off set the hard barley to an extent. A little austere and spirity on the finish with a touch of bittering oak.

Carn Mor Celebration of the Cask Linkwood 1996 (21 year old) 44%

Bourbon Barrel 8227/ Dist: Oct 1996 Btl: Jan 2018/ Tasted: Jan 2018

A beautiful, fresh and citric nose with barley, lemon, apricot, tangerine, gooseberry and lime. Some subtle creamy oak and honey appears along with a touch of cinnamon and white liquorice.

The palate opens with the creamy oak but the citrus arrives promptly, clearing the way for the barley, apricot, pecan and maple syrup notes. Lovely intensity and complexity with a long, mouth-watering gooseberry lemon, lime and mineral finish. Touch of nutty oak at the death.

Sherry Hogshead 2322/ Dist: May 1988 Btl: June 2014/ Tasted: Mar 2015

The nose displays a combination of leafy/ herbal and boiled sweet sherry. However the sherry notes have a lovely lightness of touch which allows some floral barley, juicy sultana, grape and dried tropical fruit through. Quite oily and nutty – almond and pecan with a light maple syrup and luscious honey. A touch of sawdusty vanillins and violet notes appear with time.

The palate is a little on the tannic side but uber soft with light, nutty honey, coffee, toffee and an almost pulped fruit character. Hints of sultana, dried apricot and banana come through on the middle along with the natural oils.. Juicy, succulent barley appears along with a touch of sweet vanilla. Oooh the fruit is mouth-wateringly juicy! Stunning intensity and balance with the sweet vanilla notes lingering

Hunter Laing Old Malt Cask Linkwood 1998 (15 year old) 50%

Bourbon/ Code: OMC2412/ Dist: Oct 1998 Btl: Aug 2014/ Tasted: Sept 2014

Big, bold aromas of raisinated, toffee’d fruit with hints of prune, lightly sawdusty oak, butter crème, white chocolate and a developing herbal note. Lovely depth and robustness to the nose, which feels a little older than 15.

The palate is like the nose, full, robust an vanilla focused with dried fruit, sweet violet, coriander powder and some lovely, pliant sawdusty oak, which gives the palate a delightful sweet vanilla background. Good, freshening citrus note on the middle and a long, gently spiced – sweet paprika finish. Very enjoyable.

Refill Sherry(?)/ Code: OMC2318/ Dist: Nov 1996 Btl: Oct 2013/ Tasted: Nov 2013

The nose is quite dark and malty by Linkwood standards with hints of vanilla and barley. The aromas begin to lighten as some perfumed honeysuckle emerges along with a touch of spice and citrus.

The palate is full and softly vanilla’d with barley, malt and a light honey note. According to the list this is supposed to be sherry matured but I can’t seem to discern any sherry character at all. Some lovely gritty spice appears on the middle with hints of baked fruit and liquorice. Good length which displays a textbook bitter/ sweet balance and finishes with the citrus in the ascendancy.

Hunter Laing Old Malt Cask Linkwood 1997 (18 year old) 50%

Bourbon/ Code: OMC2498/ Dist: Jun 1997 Btl: July 2015/ Tasted: Aug 2015

Aromas of crisp, white fruit, white liquorice, brittle honey and barley. Quite herbal with time with a touch of gentle stewed fruit (rhubarb?) becoming evident.

Soft and lightly creamy on the palate with again stewed rhubarb, barley and fleshy fruit. Quite tart on the middle as the ‘green’ citrus notes emerge. Quite a dry, mouth-watering citric finish with a light oak note and lingering white liquorice and root ginger.

Refill Bourbon Hogshead/ Code: OMC2638/ Dist: Jun 1997 Btl: 2017/ Tasted: Mar 2017

Dense and malty aromas with plenty of mature barley to begin with, but then it goes all ‘toshan! Boiled sweets, Turkish delight, strawberry, spice and very creamy oak.

The palate is soft and malty with barley, strawberry, Turkish delight and soft spice. The middle is pretty citric and clears the sweetness, allowing the coffee’d oak to come through. Long and remaining citric with a touch of green fruit.

Douglas McGibbon Provenance Linkwood 1997 (15 year old) 46%

Bourbon/ Code: PRV0984/ Dist: June 1997 Btl: Apr 2013/ Tasted: May 2013

A little dusty and spirity on the nose with some dark-ish honey, baked fruit, barley and malt. With time some herbal and white liquorice notes appear.

Quite soft and lighter than the nose. There is less of the malty baked fruit and more of the crisp barley and green fruit with a soft honeyed sheen. Quite a fresh middle. Good length with a light coffee note along with the returning dark-ish honey. The alcohol does however dry the finish a tad.

Mackillop’s Choice Linkwood 1984 (29 year old) 55.8%

Bourbon Cask 50/ Dist: Jan 1984 Btl: Mar 2013/ Tasted: Apr 2013

A little spirity on the nose with a distinct old grain like demeanour. Dark grains collide with coffee and walnut oil along with hints of burnt wood and light peat. With time a floral honey note appears. Very mature and bottled just in time.

The palate opens with some moist barley, honey, dark malt, treacle and a touch of peat. Quite edgy with a touch of baked fruit. Some wonderful woody/ spicy moments on the middle and it fades gracefully into more baked fruit and light tangerine. There is just enough alcohol to give it a feeling of freshness. It doesn’t take kindly to being diluted.

Bourbon/ Code: DIR0076/ Dist: Jan 1984 Btl: Mar 2014/ Tasted: Apr 2014

A huge nose, deep and seductive with oddles of dense but fragrant honey and pollen laden flowers. Divinely mature oak notes mingle with dusty barley and honey. A classic robust spey with a lovely balancing citrus note along with hints of gentle spice, burnt coffee, rose petals, fern and moss.

The palate is wonderfully full and soft, opening with vanilla laced honey, sweet spice and mature oak coated in honey. Quite malty on the middle with a sliver of lime and herbal notes. Very long, if a little drying with hints of orange conserve, light coffee and finally the gorgeous, dusty American oak. Wow those spices really linger along with a light chocolaty note

Lovely, deep, fresh aromas of citrus, apricot and moist, light honey, followed by some gentle oak notes. The oak becomes a little dusty and sweet with time.

The palate opens with dusty barley and soft oak. Lovely interplay between the oily oak vanillins, citrus and the barley on the middle. Good length with hints of leather, grapefruit and grass in the finish.

A dense nose of dusty barley and honey along with a little sweet pear. The oak takes some time to emerge but eventually it shows a lovely, mature sawdusty character. With time some Cognac-esque dried apricot and a smidge of citrus appear.

The palate is pleasantly fresh with a more focused vanilla pod character. Hints of honey appear but the minerals and citrus keep it pretty much under wraps. Subtle Cognac-esque notes of apple and apricot on the middle along with peach, lemon and white liquorice. Long and wonderfully fruity with Alsace-esque white fruit and a touch of drying spice.

The nose displays no shortage of dusty American oak and charred oak. A touch of taught barley creates a counter balance as dose a touch of citrus. Subtly honeyed but really vibrant.

The palate opens with the mature barley, malt and coffee laced honey. Darker than the nose would suggest with more spice notes. The charred oak comes through on the middle and the finish is long and citric with some seriously mouth-watering fruit and the barley returning. Slightly bitters at the end but the balance is spot on!

Lovely, mature aromas of sawdusty American oak, along with luscious, sweet honey, apricot, vanilla and barley sugar. Wonderfully deep with developing gooseberry and lime freshness.

The palate is quite grippy and barley’d with oxidised fruit, vanilla cream and subtle honey. The oak is gently dusty with a touch of cinnamon. The lime and green apple notes arrive on the finish to give a good, vibrant finale with lingering supple wood notes.

Douglas Laing Old Malt Cask Linkwood 1991 (19 year old) 50%

Bourbon/ Code: OMC2219/ Dist: Sept 1991 Btl: Nov 2012/ Tasted: Nov 2012

Seriously malty and beefy aromas along with hints of marmite, brown sugar and light peat. A touch of lime gives the nose a little lift. The oak just plays a supporting role.

The palate opens with more of the oak character, sweet vanilla and castor sugar. Actually the oak is beginning to dig in now although there is a touch of barley and fleshy apricot fruit. The piquant alcohol clears the oak allowing the malty/ beefy notes from the nose through. Good length with hints of dark spice, molasses and brown sugar on the finish.

Douglas Laing Old Malt Cask Linkwood 1990 (21 year old) 50%

A lovely, crisp and granity nose with hints of slightly sweet, floral honey. Stunningly deep with late notes of tobacco, old wood, hickory, malt and earth. The wood notes become quite pronounced witrh time but display a wonderful maturity.

The palate opens with the dark, woody notes, malt and honey followed by seeped, slightly dried fruit, dark chocolate and spice. The wonderfully mature American oak comes through on the middle and fades into a long, oxidised dried fruit finish with hints of leather and light walnut.

Whisky Exchange Linkwood 1990 16 year old 58.7%

Sherry/ Dist: 1990 Btl: 2006/ Tasted: Sept 2007

Pungent aromas of Oloroso sherry fruit and spices. Nice dollop of mature honey and a good crispness to the fruit along with some floral overtones. Water brings out a disappointing vegetal note along with some honey.

The palate is big, rich and sherried! Just like the nose, although there is no vegetal-ness on the palate with the addition of water. Intense, medium length with dusty spices.
