Auchroisk 10 year old (Flora & Fauna) 43%

Tasted: Sept 2016

A fresh and citric nose with a good barley sweetness and hints of summer meadows, vanilla, barley husks, dried apricot and a subtle honey note.

The palate show a touch more toffee’d oak and honey, but the crisp citrus and mineral notes balance. Lovely, pure vanilla and hints of wood spice on the middle. Medium length with a returning citric (lemon) bite. Very enjoyable.

Claxton’s The Single Cask Auchroisk 1991 (25 year old) 51.2%

Bourbon Hogshead 1604-7479/ Dist: Apr 1991 Btl: Apr 2016/ Tasted: May 2016

A beguiling nose of perfumed white fruit and tropical apricot, melon and luscious honey. Hints of freshening lime and gooseberry appear along with some light, dusty oak, herbs and malt biscuits. With time it becomes crisper and more barley focused with a touch of orange blossom.

The palate is hugely tropical and barley’d with creamy oak, lime, banana, apricot and melon. A serious fruit monster and a lovely mouthful! The alcohol balances the sweetness but it’s almost buried by the sheer weight of fruit. Wonderfully mellow with the subtle oak keeping it all in place. Long and finishing quite crisp with lingering minerals, citrus and honey. Wow! That’s a fantastic cask!

Carn Mor Celebration of the Cask Auchroisk 1991 (24 year old?) ?abv

Bourbon Barrel/ Dist: 1991 Btl: 2016/ Tasted: Sept 2016

Amazingly there is still an almost gristy element on the nose. Quite estery and fruity with pineapple, melon and pear along with some beautifully fragrant and dusty barley and a touch of vanilla.

The palate is full, juicy and fruity (apricot and pineapple) with dusty barley, straw and oak. Hints of slightly bitter spices appear but the weight of the fruit balances. Long and continuing barley’d with a light, mouth-watering citrus and mineral finish.

Bourbon/ Approximately 6 months finishing in ex-Port casks

Dist: 1999 Btl: May 2015/ Tasted: May 2015

Fresh and very citric aromas. Lightly gristy with a subtle hint of earthy red fruit and manure. Beautifully balanced.

The palate is as well balanced as the nose suggests. Herbal and lightly gristy barley mingles with citrus and hints of toffee. The subtle red fruit notes come through on the middle brining an additional herbal character. Long and crisp with a good mineral finish but balanced by a sprinkling of granulated sugar

A crisp and citric nose with hints of rose petals, barley, leafy herbs, earth and a smidge of baked fruit. It has quite an alcohol prickle and with time some oily toffee and lemon.

The palate is intense, barley’d and citric with oily barley and oak. Quite full on the middle as the apricot and light baked apple notes arrive, along with some tart citrus and buzzy spices. Long and barley’d with hints of clove, mint and coriander leaf in the finish along with some lightly bittering, dusty, milk chocolaty tannins and malt.

A malty and toffee’d nose with hints of citrus, grass and earth. With time the oak calms down and a little hot, herbal spirit can be discerned.

The palate is soft and toffee’d with a touch of burnt caramel. The oak again dominates. Lightly citrus on the middle but a little hot and short on the finish with some lingering malt and liquorice notes.

Quite fresh, grassy and citric aromas of white fruit, lime and hints of vanilla, castor sugar and orange. Very evocative and summery with a hint of malt, mature fruit and coffee appearing with time.

A delicious palate, which shows a lovely combination of citrus and castor sugar to begin with. Lightly fragrant oak, grass, minerals and barley comes through along with a light coffee note. Beautiful, crisp, refreshing, almost tart finish but the juiciness and a touch of marzipan balance.

The nose is young, oily and cereally. A little raw and balsamic with a touch of honey.

The palate is pleasantly fresh, grassy and citric and showing a bit more evolution than the palate. Hints of honey and oak come through on the middle. The finish, although short is pleasantly oiled with lingering cereal notes.

A very subtle nose with hints of honey, barley, light fruit and light, sweet spice.

The palate is lightly oiled but crisper than the nose with plenty of coal smoke and hints of earthy peat, although there is no indication of that on the nose. Medium length with hints of white fruit and lingering smoke.

Intense peat reek on the nose with a slight, non sherried sulphur note. In fact that sulphur note becomes rather dominant. I’m quite surprised by that as I would have though that 15 years in oak would have been plenty of time to remove those compounds. Hints of barley, white fruit and petrol follow.

The palate is full of sweet barley and a fair amount of oak. The peat is subtler and smokier with hints of seaweed, coffee and salt. Quite a bracing, citrus middle leads into a long and slightly sulphured, dry peat and tannic finish. Not the greatest cask of ‘phroaig I have ever tasted.

An oily and ever so feinty nose with barley, baked apple and cinnamon. With time some herbal rye-like notes appear along with a touch of vanilla.

The palate is lighter than the nose would suggest. Crisper and more classically Spey-like with grass, but again a very slight feintiness. Lightly oiled middle with a long barley’d, tangerine and slightly bitter peppery spice finish.

Hunter Laing Hepburns Choice Auchroisk 2002 (14 year old) 46%

A lovely nose of fragrant honey, barley and juicy apricot and pineapple. Hints of gristy barley and fresh oak follow along with a touch of grass. A delightful summer malt!

The palate is full, fruity and juicy, opening with some gentle sugar coated barley, apricot and melon. A little lightly tannic coffee’d spice appears on the middle and pleasantly nibbles on the finish. It does bitter a little but the, mineral, citrus and Sauvignon blanc-esque grassiness is lovely.

Dewar Rattray Auchroisk 1999 (21 year old) 56.6%

Bourbon Cask 7532/ Dist: 1999 Btl: Jan 2013/ Tasted: Feb 2013

A very oily, oak dominated nose with a large amount of caramel and toffee. Quite mature with some dense barley and a touch of spice.

The palate is dry and woody with oily barley and a touch of caramel. Good depth if a touch on the simple side. Building alcohol gives a mouth-watering middle and there is a light honey note in the finish.

With water the nose has become transformed. A lot fresher and quite luscious now, with hints o light tangerine. Now it has opened there is a lovely depth and purity of citrus fruit. The palate is light and if one was being rather critical it is a touch watery to begin with but it develops a lightly oiled, orange Muscat note as the citrus gets going in a juicy fashion and finishes with a touch of grass.

Now, that’s an interesting nose! Furry gooseberry skin, green apple, kiwi and a touch of unsweetened melon. I wasn’t expecting that! Earthy, herbal rye-like notes follow along with some grippy spices and hints of dried baked fruit and citrus. With time some buttery oak appears. Interesting!

The palate opens with the citrus and grippy spices plus plenty of green fruit mingling with baked, malty fruit, coffee, a touch of treacle coated dried fruit. The finish is intense, dusty and dry with hints of bitter liquorice, dark toffee, cardamom and black peppercorns.

Water really wakes the nose up! It now shows a beautiful citrus character with shimmering barley, damp straw and a touch of manure and a touch of granulated sugar. The palate has become as vibrant and citrusy as the nose with the crunchy sugar coated barley coming to the fore. Wow! This is a real breakfast malt! Hints of toasted banana, toffee and apricot come through on the finish.

Dense, honeyed and herbal aromas with barley, apricot and fragrant oak. Distinctly old skool Auchroisk with late hints of toffee, coffee and sweet-scented barley.

The palate is full and buttery with dense slabs of honey and barley. Lightly mineral on the middle with hints of citrus and crisp, white fruit. Good length with a tongue tingling citric finish along with supporting oak and hints of grass.

Scotts Selection Auchroisk 1989 (16 year old) 63.9%

Bourbon/ Dist: 1989 Btl: 2005/ Tasted: May 2007

On the nose it is soft and quiet light and oily with tangy citrus fruit, pear, banana, natural honey, bourbon oak, and a touch of grassiness and dunnage floors. Quiet Lowland-esque and quiet charming. On the palate it is pretty much as the nose.

Undiluted the alcohol somewhat dominates. However a drop of water brings out a beguiling sweetness, a juicy yummyness with a delicate touch of orange and a larger-esque malt note. It lengthens and brings out a touch of gin-like botanicals on the finish. A delightful summer malt.

I think this was a port wood finished bottling (tasted blind), with quite a pleasant nose of orange tea and blossom, but rather hollow with harsh winey fruit and ‘off the still’ cereal.

The palate opens with the ‘off the still’ cereal with only hints of juicy fruit. Pleasantly sweet but essentially one dimensional

Refill American Hogshead/ Dist: 1993 Btl: June 2009/ Tasted: June 2011

Quite a high toned nose with a distinct peppery tequila-esque character. Quite hard, almost industrial in style. Some late oak vanillins and hints of white flowers try to balance, but it’s fair to say that that this dram and the term finesse are a mile apart.

The palate opens with slightly sweet vanilla oak, followed by the peppery tequila. The oak again isn’t exactly shy; in fact it is oak central! It also develops an intrusive burnt caramel note. Some malty barley does put in an appearance, but it’s never going to balance out that amount of oak. The finish is a tad on the hot side.

Soft and creamy on the palate with vanilla ice cream, light fudge, barley and grass. The citrus duy arrives on the middle to freshen and balance the oak along with some lightly oiled apricot and pear. Very long and gently spiced with a distinct caramelized orange and malt finish.

A little more toffee’d on the palate which takes the edge of the freshness. Pleasantly barley’d with just a touch of burnt coffee. Short and a little sharp but some sugar dusted fruit comes to the rescue.

The palate opens with toffee coated fleshy apricot and banana. Not quite as fresh as the nose but still it displays a lovely depth and developing zesty citrus. It does eventually freshen towards the end with hints of grilled almond in the finish and a light, dusty spice after-taste.

A lovely fleshy nose of citrus fruit and sweet white liquorice with hints of pear drops, plum, lavender and peppery spice. Really complex with the citrus giving the aromas a lovely fresh edge. With time the vanilla oak appears as does a touch of gristy cereal.

Soft vanilla oak encloses some deep citrus, apricot, pear and white peach fruit. There is a lovely sugar duted quality to the fruit along with some slightly gristy barley and sawdust notes. Piquant alcohol leads into a very peppery, white liquorice middle. Stunning depth with a delightfully leafy/ menthol finish, which reminds me of the classic cat pee Sauvignon blanc characteristics. Exquisitely balanced.

Wow, big and floral yet surprisingly delicate with rose oil, mature honey and waxy fruit. Literally dripping in luxurious honeyed aromas, dry spices and buttery creamy notes. Lovely depth with a balancing fresh edge to it.

The palate is soft and very creamy with hard granity, crisp citrus fruit, banana and tropical yellow fruit. Oozes luxury with earth and creamy buttery notes. Tangy and citrusy with an intense creamy oakiness and a slight plasticy note. In conclusion its a lovely delicate spey, marked down due to the odd plasticy note in the finish.

A deep, rich and complex nose. Sherried yellow/summer fruit, earth, creamy oak. Very intense, very earthy with a touch of peat and smoke. Smooth, rich and spirity on the palate. Initially slightly floral, then oily sherried fruit, earth, honey and a touch of peat. Superb length which finishes dry, yet has a lovely sweet vanilla undertone.

A drop of water brings out a vegetal, almost seaweed note on the nose and emphasises the bourbon oak and citrus fruit on the palate.
